14 Sep Soaking in the Word

The following is an intense Bible Reading/listening plan for a month to help you soak in the Word.  In the name of full disclosure, I listen to the Bible more than read it unless I am studying or meditating in the Word. To actually read through the Bible in a month would take a couple of hours a day of active focused reading time whereas listening to the Word is passive; you can get your time in while driving, exercising, cleaning etc.  Dr. Ed Cole taught me to read Proverbs in the morning for wisdom, and Psalms at night for courage. You will find that I stuck with that pattern in this “soak.”

A couple of notes:
  • The Old Testament reading skips Psalms and Proverbs, since you are already reading those books separately.
  • On day “19” Psalms 119 constitutes your Old Testament reading. That same Psalm is skipped on day “24” since you will have already read it.
Here are some tips for you:
  • This not meant to produce condemnation. If you don’t get through a day’s reading, simply pick it up where you left off, or start with the new day’s reading (make it fun).
  • Although this is a form of meditating in the Word, it is not meant to replace your study time in the Bible.
  • The effect of the Word in your heart is dependent upon you being good ground (Mark 4:1-25). Make sure that your heart is soft towards God. It’s important that you come to Him with a willingness to change.
  • To really heat it up, spend more time than you typically do in prayer and worship. Adding some soaking time in His presence to your Word soak will really accelerate things.
  • It may be helpful for you (especially in the case of the Old Testament) to read/listen in a modern language Bible.
  • I have included a “New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs In-a-Month Soak” that will require less time, but still be very powerful.
